Ahau – Rulers of Yucatán – Exclusive blog

Coming to Kickstarter in Early 2022

Ahau is an innovative Euro-style board game with combined elements of worker placement, resource management, engine building, and area control. The game is set in the Classical Period of the Maya, which provides a fascinating and immersive theme. Ahau is a homage to the breathtaking Maya culture, bringing their history closer to the players. The cultural and historical aspects of the game have been closely checked by David S. Anderson, professor of anthropology and archaeology, instructor at the Radford University in Virginia, U.S., and researcher of the origins and development of early Maya culture.

In the game, players take the role of rulers in the Classic period of ancient Maya civilization. As you compete for dominance over the entire Yucatán peninsula, you will build your capital city and a glorious pyramid temple to appease the mighty Mayan gods and request their supernatural interventions. At the end of the game, the ruler with the most Fame wins.

Playtime: 90-120 min
Player Count: 1-5 players
Age recommendation: 14+

Why Play Ahau?

  • Dual engine-building for dynamic play.

Each player will build two engines at the same time: one on the player board (through building tiles), and one on the game board (through workers). The engines interlock and interact with each other in direct and subtle ways to create a super-engine that drives the game forward.

  • Excellent replayability

There is no single strategy that can work in all situations, and you will have to adapt your tactics for each setup and in-game state.

  • Almost no luck involved
    • Success in Ahau does not depend on anything beyond your own strategic skills and those of your fellow players.
  • A Balanced Pantheon
    • Our web of god powers will keep you guessing which one truly rules.
  • Escalating tension
    • Keeps players engaged and at the edge of their seats throughout the game.
  • Focus on Player Interactions
    • Without excessive confrontation or “take-that” feel.
  • More than 50 Unique Illustrations
    • And many more to come! All based on real historical examples, while remaining contemporary and fresh.
  • Immersion From Start To Finish
    • Rich aesthetics work together with carefully crafted mechanics to increase immersion into the ancient Maya culture
  • Solo Gameplay Mode by Acclaimed Designer David Digby (Undaunted, Tinner’s Trail)
    • Includes variable difficulty options and 6 AI personalities.
  • Language-Independent
    • The only language-dependent components are the rulebook and two reference cards.

  • We plan to launch our Kickstarter campaign in February 2022. The exact date will be announced in late 2021.
  • While our community has responded well to our current visuals, we want to push ourselves to do even better. The entire game is undergoing a visual audit to make it even more pleasing to the eye, and to increase its table presence. More information about this will be posted in the Facebook group and to our email subscribers.
  • We are constantly playtesting and fine-tuning the game. We will be posting the agreed and settled rules changes at this link
  • We welcome your feedback! You can reach us at info@apeiron.games or leave your comments on the rulebook here
  • A “How to Gain Fame” reference card will be added to help new players keep track of Fame (victory point) sources and build their strategies right from the start.
  • As a community-based publisher, we are open to suggestions regarding the gameplay, possible stretch goals, possible expansions, add-ons, upgrades, or anything else that comes to mind.
  • We are planning to release a mini-expansion for the game under the working title of “Ahau: Eclipse”. This expansion will feature ~12 event cards and 6 new role cards, adding even more play options, new ways to score, replayability and immersion. All email subscribers and Kickstarter users who back us on day one of the campaign will get this expansion for free.
  • We are open to localisation requests. Please contact us at info@apeiron.games!
